4 Practical Ways to Have a Closer Relationship with God

We all need to have more intimacy with God and desire to feel more closer to Him, here are 4 practical ways you can build that intimacy.

  1. Listening to worship

Listening to worship music helps us meditate on God’s character by helping us reflect on who He is and what He does for us. In addition, by singing songs of worship we get to experience direction and clarity of our walks with him. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16. Practicing listening to only worship music one day out of the week, you won’t regret it!

2. Confessing your sins (daily)

According to the Bible there are sins we commit knowingly and unknowingly. (Romans 2:12-16) God says that essentially we will be judged either way. So what better way to prevent being separated from God than praying to Him and confessing your sins? It’s good speaking to God about your failures and sins. It will even enable you to stop sinning. As it says in Hebrews 10:26 there is no sacrifice left if you keep deliberately sinning, so confession and repentance is necessary. Talk to Him about it. Nothing is too ugly to share. Doing this requires a quiet space and maybe it’s accountability from a spiritual mentor or friend. Whatever it may be confessing provides an overall clarity and deeper bond with God.

3. Reading one scripture a day

“…but who delight in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” (Psalm 1:2) Nothing brings you closer than reading and meditating on His word. Take a moment to just turn off everything that distracts you, read a scripture—specifically one verse, and let God speak to you. Doing this practice everyday alone, will help you in connecting with your Father and creates a space of growth with pin yourself and better awareness of who He is.

4. Listening at godly sermons

Sometimes it feels uncomfortable to listen to something once and then during the week forgetting everything that was said. It’s parallel to what James says, it’s similar to “someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” (James 1:23-24) How are you going to do what God says and connect with him when you only listen with no reflection or action? The act of listening to sermons and podcasts are for understanding God and having a better connection with obedience. So, take the time to listen and revisit a sermon and/or sermons and get better connected to God and better aligned with his word.
